GM Pulls Ads from Facebook, Yells at Kids to Get off the Lawn

The Wall Street Journal reported today that General Motors decided to no longer purchase ads on Facebook. The company cited how little impact the ads had on people’s decision to purchase vehicles.

With this move, GM proves that they don’t understand social media. Facebook, Twitter, blogs, YouTube and all the rest of social media don’t function like traditional marketing. Don Draper wouldn’t have a clue how to deal with Facebook. Companies like GM get the “media” part of the equation – GM is, after all, the third largest advertiser in the US. There’s no doubt that they know how to advertise, or at least how to throw a lot of money at it.
